Prediction Logs can be used with either narrative text or expository texts. At points in the text designated by the teacher, the students write their predictions of what will happen and their reasons for the predictions. This strategy is effective with students at the upper elementary level through high school and consists of the following steps:

1. Mark key points in the story at which the students will write predictions.

2. Give prediction log papers to the students.

4. The students preview the story and write their predictions at the designated points.

5. After reading each section, students determine if their predictions were correct.

6. Using their prediction logs and with the teacher's guidance, the students discuss their predictions and how they constructed meaning through the story.

7. They discuss how their personal experiences influenced their understanding of the story.

8. They discuss predictions that were not confirmed and what they missed in reading that led them to the wrong conclusions.

9. The students write their reactions or their responses to the story and the discussion.
