This strategy focuses on the sequence of events in a narrative text. It can be used with students at all levels. It can also be used as a scaffolding strategy to help students who have difficulty with story retelling. Story maps are used as follows:
1. Make a chart of the elements of narrative structure. Younger children may use a chart divided into only three parts labeled "beginning," "middle," and "end." For older students, divide the chart into segments labeled as shown below:

2. Prepare questions from the story that will lead the students through the story map.
3. Discuss the organization of the story and explain the story map.
4. During guided reading, use the prepared questions to focus the students’ attention on story structure as they discuss the text.
5. After guided reading, the students fill in the story map together, independently, or in small groups. Use the prepared questions to guide them if necessary.
6. Compare this story with other story maps the students have made.
